Exciting developments back at the Oatmeal Lab! [aka my messy, pig sty of a room]
What will this:
Look like tomorrow morning? [and/or after I do something crazy like add milk and water?]
Tune in tomorrow [or the day after...] to find out!
And now back to our show:
Today’s breakfast:
Oatmeal #106: No cows – Part II
Stolen caf food adventures! Snagged a kiwi yesterday, so this morning I get kiwi!
- oats, flax, walnuts, Kellogg’s Just Right cereal [snagged from inn breakfast buffet
], water - 0.25 cup apple juice
- 1 kiwi
I thought the kiwi flavor would match that of apple juice ’cause they’re both sweet and sour [in the fruity way, not the chicken McNugget dip way]–and the result was quite awesome! The kiwis definitely helped the fruit juice stand out more so that I could actually taste the combo of oatmeal + juice, as opposed to oatmeal + mildly sweetened water.
I also tried a new kind of tea this morning–chocolate spice tea–awesome, eh?! It did taste quite chocolatey and smooth! I’m not really a tea person, but I liked this! [Unfortunately, the tea bag was from a free sample thing
]
Pre-first-chem-lab snack:
I thought the lab was going to be three hours long–so I broke out the heavy stuff!
…but I was there for less than half an hour….
Oh well–I’m in no hurry to start lab-ing
Anyway–yeah–Clif bar! I finally have a new flavor to try–Black Cherry Almond. It tastes like it’s got rum in it–am I just crazy?
Dinner/post-first-bio-lab meal:
Since I’m on a 10 meals per week plan [the default meal plan for upper years], I eat breakfast, Sunday dinner [caf is closed], and 2 additional meals away from the cafeteria during the week so I don’t have to cook so much on weekends!
But yeah–I made the pasta salad from above this morning, and added the parmesan in when I got back to my room.
Contains: chickpeas, frozen mixed veg, whole wheat pasta, EVOO, lemon juice, oregano, parmesan
I also bought this:
With flex $$ on my way back ’cause I knew the pasta wouldn’t be enough. The blue cheese dressing is from another salad I had a while ago! I used it with the broccoli, but ate everything else plain ’cause I realized I don’t really like blue cheese that much! It tastes funny~~
AND TOMORROW IS FRIDAY!!!
Oatmeal #56: Thicker Muesli! June 30, 2008

On Saturday night, when I was preparing the muesli for Sunday morning, I decided to reduce the amount of water I put in my muesli in an attempt to reduce their wateriness:
Evidently, I was successful
And check out the awesome quality of these pictures! I was so happy at the way they came out:
Consists of:
- oats, wheat germ, sunflower seeds, milk, yogurt
- 0.25 cup water
- 1 kiwi
- 3 tbsp goji berries
- 2 tbsp raisins
With a cup of green tea
Taste-wise–too much goji berries and raisins! Am going to reduce the amount I put in by half next time ’cause they completely took over my oatmeal! But anyway, I like this thicker consistency so much better ’cause the chewy factor totally skyrockets! And not to mention the fact that it’s easier to carry around
For dinner–an awesome bowl of pasta with Tomato & Bail sauce!
And this time I had raw orange peppers, because I felt like cooking them would be a waste–why mess with a good thing?
Oatmeal #54: Tofu – Part I, II, III June 28, 2008

I’m just going to combine all my experiments with tofu into one giant post–since I want to get caught up to the more recent experiments!

Not enough flavor! That was my one complaint–could have done with the addition of something sweet. Kiwis just aren’t enough to make up for tofu’s lack of flavor! Nevertheless, it wasn’t a complete disaster–tasted like bland pudding, with a hint of soy
Thursday: Blueberries + Tofu
Much better!
I also didn’t add as much tofu this time–although with this I wasn’t full enough! Argh–seems like I just can’t win!
Oh, and I also added half a teaspoon of cocoa into the muesli ’cause I can
But I could barely taste it, so next time I’ll add one teaspoon!
Yesterday: Blueberries + Peas + Tofu
I also stirred in a very very tiny amount of blueberry-cherry jam just to sweeten up the oats even more, but I could barely taste it–grr!
Anywhoo, it was good–the peas provided a nice chewy texture–I love peas!
On a side note–tried a new flavor of milk yesterday: strawberry-kiwi-banana:
As exciting as that sounds, it was gross! Wayyyy bitter! I was not expecting that. I nearly died, but I made myself drink it all anyway ’cause I hate wasting stuff–I just looked at it as getting another few servings of fruits in and just went with it–but I was so disappointed
But the other part of my lunch was delicious
Tuna pizza toast! Can’t go wrong with that!
Dinner was rice salad–with extra virgin olive oil & parmesan cheese for flavors:
Didn’t cook the black eyed peas long enough–oops! Hope it’s not bad or anything oO I’ve heard that you shouldn’t eat raw beans…?

Tuesday’s breakfast:
Again–blurry picture–sorry! I think I’m just going to go back to using the flash…
This bowl of oats contain:
- usual amount of oats, water, milk, yogurt, wheat germ, and sunflower seeds
- 0.2 cup goji berries
- 1 kiwi
- 2 blackberries [or more? Can't remember]
Dinner was some more pasta salad! Tasted just as good without the parmesan [or maybe my tastebuds are just so insensitive that I don't sense any difference
]
With mushrooms, zucchini, carrots, peas, brussel sprouts, soy nuts, and a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil. And that’s water in the starbucks cup
Just a short post for now–because I am going for a run! I’ve build up to a 25 minute session now, with a 15-20 min walk home as a cool-down thing–I feel so energized [and hungry] after every run–it’s quite awesome! [even though it's still really hard to get myself out the door sometimes

Sunday’s muesli:
I’ve been so bad at keeping up to date with my posts lately! And sorry for the blurry pictures–like I said before–my camera sucks at taking pictures with natural light…and my hands keep shaking! Grrr…
Anyway, this breakfast consisted of:
- the usual amount of oats, water, yogurt, milk, wheat germ, sunflower seeds
- 1 kiwi
- 8 dried longans [but plumped right up after soaking with the oatmeal overnight!]
Along with a cup of green tea.
The oatmeal wasn’t anything spectacular, but it was still pretty good
I also did some baking on the same day–haven’t baked in ages–don’t know how I managed to survive!
They didn’t actually taste that much like scones
They’ve got a cakey texture, and not too sweet–just the way I like ‘em
Recipe for those who’re interested!
Makes 10 medium sized scones.
1.33 cup whole wheat flour
4 tsp applesauce
1 tbsp butter [or margarine], melted
0.25 cup quick oats
4 tsp baking powder
0.5 cup milk [or soy milk]
0.25 cup raspberries
0.5 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp sugar
1. Preheat oven to 425 F
2. Mix the melted butter and applesauce together, then add milk.
3. Then throw in the rest of the ingredients and mix til you have a firm dough.
4. Scoop parts of the dough onto the baking tray to form individual scones
5. Bake for 15 – 20 minutes
Oatmeal #43: Kiwi – Part V June 16, 2008

Am blogging at the lab right now
I’m such a slacker.

strawberries, banana, kiwi, wheat germ, peanuts, milk
Saturday’s breakfast.
I wish I could have turned this into a smoothie! It was sooo good. I love the combo of strawberry-banana with just about anything!
Had my oatmeal along with the rest of the banana.
I packed a lunch on Friday ’cause I knew I’d be at the lab for a while:
I put celery in my sandwich ’cause I was out of sandwich meat
It was a bit messy ’cause the celery kept falling out!
The salad on the side contains some more celery, carrots, frozen mixed veggies, blueberries, and a teaspoon of parmesan–it was all soggy by the time I got around to eating it at 11: 00, probably due to the frozen blueberries melting. But I was able to ignore that ’cause it still tasted fine
And I was so excited for dinner ’cause I was having curry! Haven’t made this in so long, and mom brought me a whole packet of it so yay! Let’s just say curry’s going to be on the menu for a while
With celery, carrots, mushrooms, brussel sprouts, half a salmon fillet, and brown&white rice!
Now gotta get back to work!

Dad’s card:
I mailed it home on Wednesday…hope it gets there in time!
Anywhoo–Friday’s breakfast:
Oatmeal #42: Caffeinated Veggies

kiwi, carrots, corn, pumpkin, coffee powder, milk, sugar, wheat germ
![]()
Veggie oatmeal is the best! The taste of corn & carrots with kiwi is quite interesting–it’s a combo of sweet and sour…but more sweet and only a little sour ['cause of the kiwi]
Lunch
Scrambled egg with celery, mixed frozen veggies, rye bread, and blueberries. A piece of rye bread and cheddar cheese.
I love eggs~you can mix it with anything! Rather like oatmeal
Dinner
Even more veggies!
Except I added the potatoes this time ’cause they were starting to go bad :s I bought a whole bag of potatoes ’cause it was one dollar for one bag! How could I resist a deal like that?

kiwi, blueberries, pumpkin, cocoa, sugar, wheat germ, milk
Yesterday’s breakfast…aka dinner number two because my allergies [among other things] kept me up so much that in the end I just gave up and got up. And since I was cranky, I threw in the cocoa
Yesterday’s post-run snack:
I love this stuff
If it weren’t for my love of oatmeal, I’d have it for breakfast everyday!
Lunch:
In the small bowl: Baked beans & frozen veggies
In the bigger bowl: scrambled eggs, carrots, rye bread, mushrooms, and blackberries! It was interesting and awesome
More fruity meals:
I threw in some frozen blueberries into my dinner yesterday–it turned my pasta purple–it was fun!
It could have been a dessert in itself

kiwi, apple, wheat germ, sugar, milk, walnuts
Yesterday’s bowl of oatmeal was pretty simple ’cause I wanted apples
Oh, and I decided to ditch the experiment in my blog title, at least for the moment, ’cause I have no clue whether to name a combo that I’ve never had before but one which I’m sure a ton of people have tried an “experiment” or not
So that’s how it’s going to be for a while
Packed a lunch ‘caue I had to go to the lab briefly at 10: 00 so I thought I’d just stay there til lunch time at 11 and then go for a walk~key word being “thought” ’cause I didn’t actually go for a walk
Two pieces of rye bread, with 3 slices of potatoes and a piece of cheddar cheese–yum! Can’t believe I’ve never thought to put those together in a sandwich before! Had it along with the last of my plain yogurt, mixed with jam and grapes. Anyway, as good as the lunch was, it wasn’t very filling
For dinner–pasta!
Went to the grocery store after lab to buy carrots, mushrooms, and a bag of frozen mixed veggies ’cause brussel sprouts and broccoli every night is boring–and I missed having mushrooms!
Experiment #38 – Kiwi – Part II June 10, 2008

Yesterday’s breakfast:

kiwi, banana, walnuts, wheat germ, milk
Attempt #2–much better! Bananas make everything better
Y’know I’ve been attempting to add more wheat germ to my oats in order to isolate its flavor…but it doesn’t really seem to taste like anything! Is it just me?

Kiwis are the most amazing shade of green!
I was pretty tired on Monday morning, but I talked myself into going for a run after going to lab
Managed to make it through 20 minutes!
Post-run snack:

all-bran, milk, blueberries, blackberries
Lunch:
Two pieces of rye bread, the last piece of chicken breast I have, cheddar cheese, plain yogurt and coffee granola. Of course, such amounts never satisfy my ravenous appetite
So I had another 0.25 cup of yogurt with jam, wheat germ, and grapes:
Dinner:
More pasta
There’s going to be a lot of pasta dinners in the next couple of days ’cause for some reason I’ve been craving it~
On another note, my allergies have gotten better! Although my sleep cycle’s still messed up, meh.
